Severe Weather Warnings Issued Across Thailand Amid Thunderstorms and Heavy Rains

A powerful high-pressure system and a westerly trough sweeping across Thailand have prompted urgent weather warnings from the country’s meteorological department, with thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning strikes expected in the North and Northeast, while the South braces for heavy to very heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

The department’s latest advisory highlights the severity of the incoming weather, urging residents in affected areas to take immediate precautions. In the northern and northeastern regions, people are advised to avoid open spaces, tall trees, and unstable structures such as unsecured billboards during storms. Farmers in these areas have been warned to protect crops and livestock from potential damage caused by sudden gusts and lightning.

“People in these areas should beware of severe conditions by keeping off outdoor places, big trees, and unsecured billboards, and farmers should prepare for crop damage and animal danger” the department stated in its warning.

Meanwhile, the South faces an even graver threat, with scattered heavy rains and isolated very heavy downpours forecast across several provinces, including Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Accumulations of rainwater could lead to flash floods and overflows, particularly in low-lying areas, posing risks to communities and infrastructure.

“People in the South should beware of heavy to very heavy rains and accumulations that may cause flash floods and overflows” the department cautioned.

Maritime conditions are also a concern, especially in the lower Gulf of Thailand, where waves are expected to reach two to three metres, and even higher during thundershowers. The department has advised all ships in the Gulf and Andaman Sea to proceed with caution and avoid areas prone to thundershowers. Small boats in the lower Gulf have been urged to remain ashore until conditions improve.
