In a remarkable display of courage, two young Vietnamese men risked their lives to save two Japanese children from drowning at Gotenba Beach in Mie Prefecture, Japan. The incident, which unfolded on a windy Monday afternoon, has since captured widespread admiration, culminating in an upcoming award ceremony to honor their bravery.
A Race Against the Waves
The drama began when a young boy and girl, playing on a float near the shore, were suddenly swept away by powerful waves and strong winds. According to local reports, the children were dragged nearly 100 meters from the beach and drifted along the shoreline for almost 700 meters. With the tide receding rapidly and the float at risk of capsizing, their situation grew increasingly perilous.
By chance, a group of 15 young Vietnamese individuals were nearby, enjoying a day at the beach. Hearing distant cries for help, they quickly realized the gravity of the situation. Two among them, Phạm Quốc Đạt, 27, and Tống Mạnh Tuấn, 29, did not hesitate to act. Ignoring the dangerous conditions, they plunged into the sea in a desperate bid to reach the children. 
Their first attempt was thwarted by the long distance and fierce waves, forcing them to turn back. Undeterred, Đạt and Tuấn adapted their approach. They sprinted along the shore to align themselves with the drifting children, equipped themselves with a makeshift float fashioned from a bicycle tire, and dove back into the water. Their determination paid off as they battled through the waves, reaching the terrified children after a grueling effort.
Upon reaching the pair, the men worked to calm them, offering reassurance amid the chaos. Meanwhile, their companions on the shore alerted the police and called for additional help. The children’s mother and grandmother, unable to swim, were overcome with panic as they watched the scene unfold. Reports indicate that the mother, upon realizing her children were in danger, nearly jumped into the sea herself before learning of the rescue effort underway.
After roughly 30 minutes of struggling against the relentless waves, Đạt and Tuấn successfully brought the children back to safety. Their safe return was met with relief and joy from family members and onlookers alike. Speaking to local correspondents, Đạt reflected on the instinct that drove their actions: the urgent need to save lives, even at great personal risk. Their second attempt, he noted, was fueled by the fear that any delay could prove fatal.

The Mie Prefectural authority has announced plans to honor the two men with certificates of merit at a ceremony scheduled for August 28 at 10 a.m. A representative from the Naka Fire Fighting Department in Tsu City confirmed the invitation, commending the pair for their bravery in saving the young lives.
