Changi Airport Reclaims Title as World’s Best in 2025

Singapore’s Changi Airport has once again soared to the top, clinching the coveted title of the world’s best airport at the 2025 Skytrax World Airport Awards. Announced at a ceremony in Madrid, Spain, on April 9, this marks the 13th time Changi has secured the No. 1 spot since the awards began in 2000, setting a record for the most wins in the history of the prestigious ranking. The achievement not only underscores Changi’s enduring excellence but also highlights Singapore’s pivotal role as a global aviation hub.

A Record-Breaking Triumph

Changi Airport outshone competitors like Qatar’s Hamad International Airport, which took second place after leading in 2024, and Japan’s Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), which came in third. Rounding out the top five were South Korea’s Incheon International Airport and Japan’s Narita International Airport. Beyond the overall title, Changi also swept additional accolades, including Best Airport in Asia, Best Airport for 60 to 70 Million Passengers, Best Airport Dining Experience, and the newly introduced World’s Best Airport Washrooms award.

The Skytrax awards, determined by a global survey of over 13 million travelers from more than 100 countries between August 2024 and February 2025, evaluate airports based on user experiences across various touchpoints—check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security, immigration, and departure gates. Edward Plaisted, chief executive of Skytrax, hailed Changi’s latest win as a “great achievement,” particularly noting the significance of the washroom award. “With washrooms being a major driver of customer satisfaction during their airport experience, we congratulate Singapore Changi Airport on receiving the first-ever world’s best airport washrooms award” he stated.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) chief executive Yam Kum Weng expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the airport’s commitment to excellence. “It is indeed gratifying to receive this recognition, and this certainly encourages us to continue to strive to provide the best travel experience. We thank all our passengers for their vote of confidence” he said.

A Legacy of Excellence

Since its inaugural win in 2000, Changi has been a consistent frontrunner in the Skytrax rankings, boasting the longest winning streak with eight consecutive victories from 2013 to 2020. Though it briefly ceded the top spot to Hamad International Airport in 2021 and 2024, and to Haneda Airport in 2022, Changi’s resilience and adaptability have kept it at the forefront of global aviation. With 697 accolades to its name, as reported by CAG, it stands as the world’s most awarded airport.

The airport’s latest triumph comes amid a robust recovery from the pandemic’s impact on global travel. In 2024, Changi handled 67.7 million passengers, a 14.8 percent increase from the previous year and just shy of its pre-Covid record of 68.3 million in 2019. Authorities anticipate that passenger numbers in 2025 will surpass pre-pandemic levels, signaling a full rebound and potential for further growth as travel demand continues to surge in Asia and beyond.

Innovation at the Heart of Changi’s Success

Changi’s appeal lies not only in its operational efficiency but also in its relentless focus on passenger experience through innovative offerings. In 2024, the airport welcomed 28 new brands and concepts, including Asia’s first Heineken World Bar and Victoria’s Secret’s debut beauty and lingerie concept store in the region’s travel retail sector. These additions have bolstered its reputation for offering a world-class shopping and dining experience, further evidenced by its Best Airport Dining Experience award.

Moreover, Changi has prioritized passenger wellness with initiatives like the Fit&Fun Zone in Terminal 2, launched in February 2025. Designed to combat travel fatigue, this space offers a unique respite for travelers, reflecting the airport’s forward-thinking approach to enhancing every aspect of the journey. Such innovations distinguish Changi from its peers, catering to the evolving needs of modern travelers who seek more than just transit efficiency.

More Than Just an Airport

Beyond its core facilities, Changi Airport extends its excellence to hospitality. The Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, located at Terminal 3, clinched the World’s Best Airport Hotel and Best Airport Hotel in Asia awards for the 10th consecutive year. This consistent recognition highlights how Changi’s ecosystem integrates seamless travel with top-tier accommodation, offering passengers a holistic experience from arrival to departure.

The airport’s infrastructure and services are a testament to Singapore’s broader vision of positioning itself as a global leader in connectivity and innovation. As a key gateway to Southeast Asia, Changi serves as more than a transit hub; it is a symbol of the city-state’s meticulous planning and ambition. Its ability to handle over 60 million passengers annually while maintaining high standards of service speaks to the efficiency and dedication embedded in its operations.

Economic Implications for Singapore and Beyond

Changi’s success has ripple effects on Singapore’s economy, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for business and tourism. The airport contributes significantly to job creation, with thousands employed directly and indirectly in aviation, retail, and hospitality sectors. Its recovery to near pre-Covid passenger levels in 2024, with expectations of exceeding them in 2025, signals a boost to tourism revenue and related industries, which are critical to Singapore’s GDP.

Moreover, Changi’s dominance in global rankings enhances Singapore’s soft power, projecting an image of reliability and excellence. This is particularly significant in a region where competition among airports—such as Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi, Kuala Lumpur International, and Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta—is intensifying. By setting benchmarks in passenger experience, Changi not only elevates its own standing but also pushes regional counterparts to innovate, ultimately benefiting travelers across Southeast Asia.

However, sustaining this position requires continuous investment and adaptation. As global travel patterns shift and sustainability becomes a priority for passengers and regulators alike, Changi will need to balance growth with environmental responsibility. Initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency could be the next frontier for the airport, aligning with broader global trends in aviation.

A Benchmark for Global Aviation

Changi Airport’s 13th win at the Skytrax World Airport Awards is more than a milestone; it is a reminder of what relentless pursuit of quality can achieve. Its ability to reclaim the top spot amidst fierce international competition reflects a deep-rooted commitment to excellence that resonates with millions of travelers worldwide. From state-of-the-art facilities to award-winning washrooms, Changi continues to redefine what an airport can be.

As passenger numbers climb and new challenges emerge, the question remains: how will Changi sustain its edge in an increasingly crowded field? For now, as it basks in the glow of its latest accolades, Singapore’s flagship airport stands as a beacon of innovation and a gateway to the future of travel.
